EDG was engaged to review and analyze the overall architectural concept for a proposed 400,000 square meter indoor shopping and dining mall located within new residential complex outside of Harbin, China. Harbin is home of the ‘Annual Harbin Ice Festival’ that draws over one million visitors every winter. The owner’s goal was to both leverage Harbin’s existing tourism appeal while maximizing mall visitation and retail sales. EDG’s solution was to innovate the mall experience by blurring the boundaries between retail shopping and entertainment experience thereby creating a new attractive regional destination.
In order to make this tourism experience more unique within Harbin’s winter reputation, the concept was designed around the idea of “Year-Round Summer,” which included an indoor water park and interactive/virtual reality games. Related theming, themed facades, and entertainment attractions are interspersed throughout the mall experience, with a “VR Games Volcano” at its concentric center.
EDG was responsible also for the market and feasibility, concept documentation, cost and schedule, recommendations for required building modifications, branding, and character development.
