COIFAIR, the ‘China Overseas Investment Fair’ is an international investment conference held annually in China. As the premier event aimed toward encouraging Chinese investment and trade abroad, this expo fair is the foremost platform for Chinese enterprises to engage with foreign entities. EDG was engaged to create a permanent home for COIFAIR on a 560 acre (225 hectares) mixed use site in Beijing. The master plan includes a convention center, an investment center, an observation tower, international RD&E districts, a 5-star iconic hotel, and pavilions and housing representing countries throughout the world. In order to organize these elements, their placement was guided by the form of the number ‘8’.
Within the number 8 form are two independent islands featuring the Trade & Investment Center and the International Exhibition Center. Between the two is the terminal end of the number eight gesture – the spiraling International Trade Tower, a 100+ meter high-rise luxury hotel that mimics the form of a Chinese ribbon dancer as its multimedia façades weave around its exterior.
Two other important components include the Hemisphere Global Village, two independent RD&E Districts, nestled on the North and South side of the International Tower, an eco-friendly park that serves as a retreat for convention goers and local Beijing residents. To further the cohesive environment of the site, the design team ensured access to every piece of program could be accessed through the Seven Continent Gates – seven independent egress points that filter all traffic to and from the convention site.
